After months of planning and anticipation, construction work has begun on the Wesley Emergency Centre refurbishment.
Director of the Wesley Emergency Centre Gavan Doig said it will be business as usual at the Emergency Centre during the renovation, which is expected to be completed in August.
The upgrade is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to improve WEC services and will provide:
- Five additional patient treatment bays
- New waiting and reception area
- Upgraded facilities for staff and patients
- New room for visiting medical practitioners
Dr Doig said the renovation came in response to increased demand for emergency services at the Wesley, partly driven by an ageing population.
"When WEC opened in 1994 it was a small unit with only 12 patient cubicles designed for a capacity of 15,000 patients," he said.
"We are now seeing between 22,000 and 24,000 patients a year. We have well and truly outgrown our infrastructure."
Dr Doig said the WEC refurbishment would improve the experience of patients and make the service faster and more efficient.
"The Wesley apologises for any inconvenience this redevelopment causes and we thank patients for their patience while our upgrade is in progress", he said.
