Interpreters for patients and their families
At St Stephen’s Hospital, we welcome Culturally and Linguistically Diverse patients and their families. While English is the language by which healthcare is delivered in Australia, if you need an interpreter, our patient administration team can arrange one to ensure your medical treatment proceeds smoothly.
Our friendly reception team and ward clerks will be happy to provide further information. Contact us today.
TIS National
If a local interpreter cannot be found, Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National can be used. The Department of Home Affairs provides the TIS National service for people who do not speak English.
TIS National has more than 50 years’ experience in language services, with access to more than 3,000 contracted interpreters across Australia, speaking more than 160 languages.
TIS National recommends that interpreters should be used:
- To ensure accurate communication between people who have different language needs.
- Because effective professional practice requires both parties to have a clear understanding of each other.
- Because in times of crisis or stress, a person’s second language competency may decrease.
Call TIS National on 131 450 to access an immediate phone interpreter.
