“A vital part of the future of Richard Roylehealthcare in Australia” - that is how UnitingCare Health’s St Stephen’s Hospital is described in a new book Improving Health Management through Clinical Decision Support Systems.

The chapter St Stephen’s Hervey Bay: Study of Developing a Digital Hospital, co-written by UnitingCare Health’s Executive Director Richard Royle, and Connie Harmsen, who was UnitingCare Health’s ehealth Program Director, provides a case study on the successful launch of Australia’s first fully integrated digital hospital.

St Stephen’s became the first hospital in the country to achieve Stage 6 certification by the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) for its advanced Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

In less than three years the UCH team successfully launched the new digital hospital through extensive planning, clinician engagement and leadership strategies that fostered timely identification of challenges and the creation of effective solutions, allowing the $96 million hospital to open on-time and on-budget on October 13, 2014.
