Dr John-Paul Blanc
Dr John-Paul Blanc has been a general ophthalmologist on the Fraser Coast / Hervey Bay / Maryborough since 2006. He lives in Hervey Bay, enjoying the outdoors lifestyle, the climate and the people.
Dr Blanc graduated from the University of Auckland Medical School and completed his ophthalmology training in Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland in New Zealand, passing the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists examinations in Sydney.
Following this, he did two years of fellowship training in general ophthalmology and eyelid surgery in the United Kingdom before spending a year sub-specialising in eyelid and orbital surgery at the University of Montreal in Canada. He maintains a close relationship with his colleagues around the world to stay up to date with the latest research and surgical techniques.
In general ophthalmology he looks after cataract surgery, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) – including intravitreal injections and oculoplastic surgery – eyelid surgery including ectropion, entropion, blepharoplasty/lid reduction, lacrimal surgery – treatment of watery eyes and skin cancers around the eyes.
Dr Blanc is fully registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency with no restrictions. He is also a full member of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. He has a position as a Senior Lecturer in the Rural Clinical Division of the University of Queensland and is involved with teaching the local medical students. He has Specialist registration in the United Kingdom.
He volunteers on the IDEAs van, an Indigenous diabetic eye initiative that visits Hervey Bay two to three times a year. He also tries to spend a week every year volunteering in the Pacific, doing cataracts and plastic surgery for the locals. This is particularly challenging and and brings a great deal of satisfaction.
