Dr Aidan Cleary is an experienced, Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty fellowship qualifications. He has a special interest in hip and knee conditions, including robotic hip and knee replacement surgery and arthroscopic surgery of the knee. He also has an interest in hand and wrist surgery, foot and ankle conditions, and a broad range of experience in orthopaedic trauma.
Dr Cleary completed his orthopaedic training in Queensland, where he gained highly specialised experience in robotic joint replacement surgery at the Prince Charles Hospital, one of the first public hospitals in Australia to be equipped with a multi-platform hip and knee arthroplasty robot. This gave Dr Cleary the unique ability to enhance his skills and experience with this technology from early on in his career. His training encompasses non-robotic and robotic-assisted total hip replacement, partial knee replacement and total knee replacements. He went on to further his subspecialty expertise through an Australian Orthopaedic Association accredited fellowship on the Central Coast/Northern Sydney, focusing on robotic hip and knee arthroplasty with one of the early pioneering surgeons to use this technology in New South Wales.
Dr Cleary has significant research and university teaching experience. Throughout his career he has held academic and teaching positions at The University of Queensland, Griffith University, James Cook University and The University of Newcastle New South Wales. Dr Cleary remains actively involved in the education of medical students and junior orthopaedic doctors throughout his public hospital appointment.
Before pursuing a career in medicine, Dr Cleary served as a mechanical engineer, contributing to the design and development of state-of-the-art cochlear hearing implants. His previous work equipped him with advanced technological skills, which he applies in the field of orthopaedics and robotics.
Raised in rural South-East Queensland with 150 years of farming in his family, Dr Cleary has first-hand experience of the health challenges faced by rural Australians. This experience has fuelled his commitment to giving back and supporting regional Queensland communities by delivering high-quality orthopaedic healthcare locally. Residing in Hervey Bay, Dr Cleary and his family are proud to be permanent residents of the Fraser Coast community.
Dr Cleary is the founder of Fraser Coast Orthopaedics and operates at St Stephen's Hospital; Hervey Bay Surgical Hospital; and Hervey Bay Hospital (public appointment).
He believes in a patient-centered approach to care and takes the time to listen to patients and understand their individual needs. Dr Cleary is looking forward to helping patients on their healthcare journey.
